Research Opportunities

Funded Opportunities for PhD Students

We currently have:

  1. Two fully-funded PhD student positions on CFD modeling of hurricanes using OpenFOAM, including (but not limited to) modeling of wind-vegetation interaction, modeling of the hydrodynamics of wave-mangrove interaction, modeling of water quality (1D-3D), machine learning/AI for reduced-order modeling, air-water high speed flows, and urban water flows modeling. Interest in experimental work of hurricanes is a plus. The Florida International University (FIU) Wall of Wind (WOW) is the United States' only university-based full-scale simulator capable of producing Category 5 hurricane winds (157+ mph).
  2. Two or three fully-funded PhD student positions on CFD modeling of hydrodynamics and water quality. We look for highly motivated students with great programming skills (Python, C++, etc) and experience in modeling the fate and transport of pollutants (water quality modeling in 1D, 2D and 3D). Experience in using BioChemFOAM, EFDC, WASP and EPANET is a plus.

Please send your CV, GRE and TOEFL (if applicable) scores, and PDF of your most-relevant publication (e.g., Journal paper) to arleon@fiu.edu. Qualified candidates for the respective positions will be contacted for a Skype interview within one week of application. Others will not be contacted.

If you are considering joining this research group, please read the Graduate Student Guidelines and Expectations of our team here

Visiting Scholar Research Opportunities

We always have research opportunities for self-funded graduate students and visiting Post-docs and Faculty. For our current research projects, please see here

General

We are always interested in recruiting highly motivated and academically talented graduate students from Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or other related areas. Please send your CV, GRE and TOEFL (if applicable) scores, and PDF of your most-relevant publication (e.g., Journal paper) to arleon@fiu.edu. Top candidates will be contacted for a Skype interview.
