Welcome to the FIU Hydraulics Reseach Laboratory, Miami, FL

Overview

The FIU Hydraulics Reseach Laboratory (FHRL) is a new large-scale facility housed in the FIU Engineering Center, Miami, FL. This state-of the-art facility has a footprint of 4800 ft2 (446 m2) and features a ... recirculating system with the ability to test up to three simultaneous and independent experiments with flows up to 10.6 cfs (300 L/s). The facility consists of constant head water and air tanks, variable and constant speed pumps, and impulsion and return pipe lines.

Potential Test Cases

The facility can be used for testing most physical hydraulic models, including:

  • River hydraulic structures (open-channel flows)

  • High-head pressurized systems

  • Performance of various types of green infrastructure

  • Flood control

  • Air-water high-speed flows

  • Storm surge protection

  • Erosion and scour control

  • Stream restoration
