Aviation mechanics holding an FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Certificate play an important role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of airplanes and helicopters. They service; maintain, repair, and overhaul aircraft, to include aircraft systems such as engines, propellers, landing gear, hydraulics, electrical, oxygen, flight controls, and airframes.
Commercial airline companies and fixed-base airport operators are major employers of A&P licensed mechanics throughout the United States and overseas. General aviation employs thousands of mechanics working in such diverse fields as privately owned aircraft, aircraft overhaul facilities, air taxi operations, FAA certified repair stations, crop dusting, corporate aircraft, and aircraft manufacturers. All of the military services also employ civilian aircraft mechanics at various installations around the country and overseas.
Major airlines generally pay between $11 and $16 an hour as entry-level wages. Within five years, an A&P mechanic can earn between $35,000 and $45,000 per year. Starting pay in general aviation ranges between $7 to $10 an hour.
The Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) program is designed to give students the knowledge and skills they need to pass the FAA examinations for the A&P certificate, thereby allowing them to begin a career as an aviation mechanic. The AMT program is eight trimesters long and includes lots of practical applications. The Electronic Technology program prepares students for employment as electrical and electronic technicians. The complete program includes AC, DC, and analogy circuits: solid state and digital devices; circuit diagrams and schematics: and microprocessors. The program is six trimesters long.
YES! Job Placement assistance is available to students upon completion of their training. Some part-time jobs may be available for qualified students.
Tuition cost is approximately $700 per trimester. There is an additional cost for books, supplies and tools.
