About George T. Baker Aviation School

George T. Baker Aviation School is located next to Miami International Airport and serves about 500 high school students and about 400 adult students every day. The school is part of the Dade County Public School Systems, and is fully accredited by the Council on Occupational Education and Federal Aviation Administration.

Registration Information

Most programs at George T. Baker Aviation School permit to enroll on an open-entry basis. Any adult student may be admitted provided the individual is 16 years of age and not attending high school. High school students may attend on a shared-time basis provided they are approved by the counselor at the home school and Baker Aviation.

Application Procedures

Adult students may apply and register in person at the Registration Office from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Fridays. High school students must contact the Guidance Office at the home school.

Tuition & Fees

Adult students pay a fee for tuition, books, and supplies. High school students are not charged a fee for tuition but may be assessed a supply fee based program requirements.

Class Hours

Full-time adult students may attend class from 7:10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. or 5:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. High school students attend class from 7:10 a.m. to 9:40 a.m. or 12:00 noon to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Transportation

Metro Dade Transit Authority serves Baker Aviation with daily bus service. High school students are provided bus transportation to and from school.

Financial Aid

The school participates in the Federal Financial Aid Program and is approved for veterans training. All students must see the counselor to determine eligibility for financial aid. Students are encouraged to schedule an appointment by calling (305) 871-3143 extension 210.

Articulation Agreement

Students who complete the Airframe and Powerplant Technician Program and obtain an FAA license are eligible for 27 hours of college credit at Miami-Dade Community College.

Programs offered in Baker Aviation School

Airframe and Powerplant Technician Program

This 2400 hour program prepares students for entry-level employment as an aircraft mechanic. Students may enroll on a part-time or full-time basis. The program also provides supplemental training for persons previously or currently employed in the aviation industry. All courses are FAA approved. The program is divided into the following sections:

General (480 hours)

Eight 60-hour blocks of instruction are a prerequisite for the completion of the Airframe and/or Powerplant Technician Program.

Airframe Technician (960 hours)

These 60-hour blocks of instruction provide an in-depth study of Airframe Structures and Systems. Students are qualified to obtain an Airframe Technician Certificate upon completion.

Powerplant Technician (960 hours)

These 60-hour blocks of instruction provide an in-depth study of Powerplant Theory/Maintenance and Systems. Students are qualified to obtain a Powerplant Technician Certificate upon completion.

Electronic Technology

Electronic Technology is 1080 hours program designed to prepare individuals for employment as electrical and electronic technicians. Students may enroll on a part-time or full-time basis. The content area includes AC, DC, and analog circuits; solid state and digital devices; microprocessors; use of circuit diagrams and schematics; laboratory practices; and technical recording and reporting.

Avionics

Avionics is a 720 hour program designed to prepare students for employment as radio mechanics and avionics technicians. Students may enroll on a part-time or full-time basis.

The content area includes studies in troubleshooting; repair and installation of airborne radio navigation and radar equipment; and instruction in AM and FM transmitters and receivers. Electronic Technology is a prerequisite for Avionics.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

The school offers four levels of ESOL to prepare students to improve their ability to speak, write, and read English. The course offers both individualized and small group instruction. Students must complete an entrance examination to determine proper placement. Classes are offered day and evening. There is no charge for these classes. Students must purchase books and supplies.
