Tension

   Tension is the stress which tends to pull things apart. When you try to break a length of rope, you exert a type of stress which is called tension. (see animation or figure 1-2a) <p><img src="images/pic1-2a.gif" alt="Type of stress: Tension" align="bottom" width="288" height="115">
