Miami Coral Park High School was named 1996 National School of Excellence by Ryder
Corporation in collaboration with Hispanic Magazine.
Mr. William Machado, Principal, was named 1995-1996 Dade Counseling Association
Administrator of the year.
Mrs. Maria Sierra, Foreign Language Department Chairperson, was named Florida Spanish
Teacher of the Year.
Three students were named National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) Hispanic
Merit Scholars.
Sixty percent of the students in Coral Park took the Advanced Placement Exam (155 out of
255) scored 3 or above to earn college credit.
J.R.O.T.C. was recognized as an "Honor Unit with Distinction", the highest
achievement awarded by the Department of the Army, eleven of the twelve years we have had
this program.
Coral Park Sr. High's Cheerleaders were evaluated National Champions in the Cheerleaders
of America competition held in Jacksonville/ Florida.
Eleven students were chosen as Florida Scholars in 1995-96, bringing the total to 40 since
1992.
The Adopt-A-Grandparent Program ("I Can Help") was the inaugural recipient of
the Florida "Learn and Serve" Award.
Our students earned Third Place in the Florida State Spanish Competition, and also Third
place in the Dade County Spanish Competition.
Standardized test scores improved in the 9th/11th grade Stanford Achievement Test and 10th
grade "Florida Writes" (second in Dade County).
The annual daily student attendance of 92.95% ranked second in Dade County Public Schools.
Miami Coral Park Sr. High School was ranked the least violent regular high school in Dade
County Public Schools as reported by the Miami Herald.
The Florida Action Movement for Minorities in Engineering (Fl.A.M.E.) students earned a
first place in the Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering (SECME) Olympiad.
The 1996 graduating class earned 1.1 million dollars in scholarship money.
The Band of Gold, our school's marching band, received straight superior ratings at
state evaluations and was ranked 40th nationally in the Band of America competition
held in Atlanta, Georgia.
Our yearbook, Arieon, received a Silver Medallion from the Columbia Scholastic
Press Association.
Our student newspaper, The Rampage, earned a First Class Award from the National
Scholastic Press Association.
Our Woodshop students won two grand Championships at the 1996 Dade County Youth Fair, and
led the county in the number of First Places earned.
The Drama Department's Thespians were rated "Superior in District 8.
Our math students placed 11th at the David Essner Competition (700 students participated
country-wide), ranking as the best math students in the country.
The ninth grade literary magazine, PHIZZOG, earned First place in the Region III
Youth Author's Desktop Publishing Contest.
United Way donation from faculty and staff led the county for the second consecutive year
by contributing $13,632.
Our students led Region III by contributing more than $3,350 to the United Way.
The Miami Herald awarded a Silver Knight Honorable Mention in art.
Our Athletic Program ranked 11th out of 26 high schools in Dade County, winning over 62%
of all athletic contests.
District Championships were won in bowling, wrestling, soccer (boys'), basketball
(girls'), and track (girls').
DECA has carried 100% Membership for nine years, and has been recognized for meeting the
challenge for "five more" additional members by National DECA.
DECA has met the challenge of 100 more community hours for Florida DECA.
F.B.L.A. was recognized as a Meritorious Chapter in Dade County.
Our students ranked second in Dade County by donating over 550 pints of blood to the
American Red Cross
