Equipment:
Magnetize needle (nail) as described in Experiment 7, but instead of suspending from the rod with string, use two corks and place in bowl of water (see drawing below). One end of needle (nail) will point to magnetic north.
NOTE: When the magnetized needle is suspended by the thread or placed in the bowl of water you must be sure it is not near a large iron object or pipe. Iron or steel objects will attract the magnet and it will not point to magnetic north.
