The Parking & Transportation Department, the Office of University Sustainability, and the Recreation Services department have come together in a joint effort to create the university's first-ever bike shop, adopting the student volunteer-run initiative that has been up and running since February 2011. This move allows FIU to join other universities across the nation who have established their own shops, and will greatly benefit the student body, campus employees, and the rest of the community, the latter of which has been barred from our services until now.
This new development is due to the ever increasing demand for bike-related repairs and services during our weekly operations at the campus Farmer's Market, the increase of bicycle users on campus, as well as the cooperation of various students and employees alike. Continuously relaying this interest to campus officials has also helped to achieve this milestone.
What does this mean for you? Most aspects of the service will remain unchanged, and certain things have not yet been set in stone. However, below are the most significant changes you can expect when we open this fall:
-New location. We will continue to maintain our presence at the farmer's market, but we will be open for service every day of the week, as opposed to once a week like it was before. On all other days aside from Wednesday, we will be at our shop location, which will be at the Recreation Services trailer (just west of Panther Garage).
-Pricing. Some services will remain free, some will not. This has not been determined yet. However, all services will continue to be free on Wednesdays.
-This website will be taken down. After our new website is up and running, this website will no longer be available, since it's been running on a student domain since day one. Our Twitter and Facebook accounts will remain.
-Shop hours, and days of the week. The shop hours have not yet been determined, but the shop will be open Monday through Saturday.
This page will be updated as more information is available. Thanks to everyone who made this possible!
