EML 1533: Introduction to CAD for ME

 

Objectives:

1. Use SolidWorks (the version available in EIC) to accomplish a mechanism design and motion animation.

2. Review of skills in solid modeling, assembling, and engineering drawing.

3. Improve document preparation and presentation skills.

4. Reinforce team-work spirit.

 

Requirements:

1. Two or three students form a team to accomplish this mechanism design project.

2. The project must include:

   a. the models and drawings of all the parts.

b. an assembly including at least 9 parts and assembly drawings.

   c. a video of the motion animation.

  d. a design document and a video presentation.

3. A printed MS Word document of the project has to be submitted on the due date, which should include:

a. an introduction of the design.

b. discussions of the typical functions (including screenshots) of the design.

c. a set of technical drawings as an appendix.

d. an introduction of the team members. It may include your favorite photos, hobbies, interests, favorite quotations, etc…

4. Each team has to record a 3-5 minute video presentation. A presentation will be held in class on the due date.

5. Submit a CD or USB on the due date, which should include all files of the part models, assemblies, drawings, an animation video, and a MS Word document.

6. The video presentation has to be submitted by noon on the day before presentation. If the size of video file is too large, you may share it with me in Google drive or Dropbox.

7. There will be a sign-in sheet on the day of the final project presentation. Those who do not attend the final project presentation without an acceptable reason will not receive a grade of the final project.

 

Grading Criteria:

Design: 80%

   1. A useful and/or interesting application.

2. Correct mechanism design.

3. Correct models and drawings with the standard dimensions and tolerances for each part.

4. Correct assembly and assembly drawings.

5. Satisfactory animation videos of the mechanism design.

Presentation:   10%

   A good video presentation.

Document:      10%

   A complete package of the project which includes all files in a CD or USB.
